Dave Curtis
Starting off his career in the Hard Dance scene doing reviews and PR under the wing of Marc Johnson and the FlashPoint label, Dave has come a long way in a short space of time. Being a FlashPoint DJ enabled him to get gigs at some of the country's biggest nights and got him well known in the scene. He followed this with a raft of well-received productions, the first signing of which was Booze Cruise to the legendary Tripoli Trax.

Many more have followed, finding homes on Spinball Records (Brain Drain), Fireball (Habanero), Combat (Hard House Rools), Carbon Records (Weekender and No More), Encoded NRG (Hurt Me), Toolbox (Black Sheep and his competition winning Submission Remix), and Kung Fu Wax (Snapshot) to name a few. There will be no let up either, with tracks coming whenever (and only whenever!) he can be sure of coming up with something that sounds a bit different; something that sets him apart from everyone else.

2009 has seen Dave play at more venues than ever, with the year culminating in Frantic's Hard House Academy @ Brixton Academy, Storm @ the Emporium and Tidy @ Air, with a very special New Year's Eve appearance in London. Added to this, his night Requiem is going from strength to strength with some of the best established and new artists in the scene appearing at every event. With vs nights starting up towards the end of the year, the brand is fast becoming a name that people want to have on their DJing CV.

Probably the biggest achievement this year was becoming the Hard Dance reviewer for the renowned clubbing magazine, Mixmag. Coming from such a Hard House background it was a welcome surprise to be accepted, and has been a real ear-opener to other styles of harder-edged music in the scene. It is something he works hard at to retain a decent mention of the music he loves in hard house, but to keep an even spread of styles.

The end of 2009 will also see the launch of his own label Caterpillar Trax which will be an outlet for his own material and that of the co-owners Batten & Brow, as well as releasing Hard Dance and Techno tracks from other artists that catch their ear. There will be no restrictions - the only criteria that will need to be met being that it needs to be good, and they all need to like it! Expect to see regular monthly releases of 4 tracks digitally, with a CD in the pipeline for the New Year.

And for the future? 2010 will see Dave try his hand at more genres, with more Hard Dance gigs planned, as well as some back-room sets playing trance and techno. This will be no cheesy sell-out though. Dave's music will remain to have that darker edge which got him into production, DJing, and clubbing in the first place, and which will hopefully again see him recognised as being someone who doesn't follow the crowd.
